With lots of well-preserved historic architecture, Downtown McKinney is a great place to stroll and explore. Cadillac Pizza Pub is a welcoming spot with gourmet New York-style pizzas prepared daily with fresh local ingredients. They also offer 12 craft beers on draft and frequent live music performances. Mellow Mushroom is another fine choice for stone-baked pizzas and craft beers. Harvest serves a seasonal menu of delicious farm-to-table cooking. The menu at this rustic Zagat-rated restaurant includes artisanal meats and game, Wagyu beef steaks, and pan-seared seafood specialties. Patina Green Home and Market also offers gourmet farm-to-fork cuisine, including sandwiches loaded with mouthwatering and fresh fillings. Hugs Café is a local non-profit that provides work and training for adults with special needs. Stop by for hot drinks and specialty sandwiches and salads prepared with Boar’s Head cheeses and deli meats. Unwind in the tree-shaded outdoor dining space at The Yard with classic Tex-Mex and Southern-style comfort eats paired with craft beers and frozen cocktails. Head to Landon Winery to sample the best local wines alongside award-winning international varietals. Lone Star Wine Cellars also offers a range of local wines in a convivial setting with regular live music. Local Yocal is a family-run business with two Downtown McKinney locations: Local Yocal BBQ & Grill serves some of the best Texas-style smoked meats in McKinney, while Local Yocal Farm to Market is your go-to for pasture-raised meats and organic dairy products. Many more eateries and big-box stores can be found clustered around the intersection of Highways 75 and 380 in North McKinney. Big-name retailers here include Best Buy, Home Depot, Kroger, and Target.
Things to Do
A few blocks south of the historic downtown area, Chestnut Square Historic Village contains traditional homes and a schoolhouse, a chapel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop, all built between 1854 and 1940. The bucolic countryside around McKinney is prime vinicultural land. Head to Wales Manor Vineyard to sample fine local wines and enjoy events such as live music nights. McKinney also has outstanding craft beer breweries located outside the historic downtown area. TUPPS Brewing and Franconia Brewing Company each offer brewery tours and fantastic beer. TUPPS Brewing is located in a converted cotton mill and brews innovative craft flavors, while Franconia Brewing Company dates back to 1800 and focuses on traditional Bavarian wheat beer. Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary has five miles of hiking trails running through a 289-acre sanctuary with several distinctive habitat areas. Visitors can see life-size animatronic dinosaurs, a butterfly garden with a butterfly house, and animal exhibits, including native Texas snakes. The museum and sanctuary also contains a Pioneer Village featuring a miniature recreation of a late-1800s settlement. The Towne Lake Recreation Area covers more than 100 acres surrounding a lake with a fishing pier and paddleboat rentals. Oak Hollow Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course with a putting green, a driving range, a pro shop, and a clubhouse with a restaurant.
